ELSTOW DRAINAGE BOARD

JUNE MEETING The usual monthly meeting of the Elatovv Drainage Board was held iu the clerk’s office, Waihou, on Saturday last. There wero present—Messrs J. A. Clothier (chairman), G. W. Horn, A. Davey, W. G. Cooper, B. Fitton, and the elork-engiueor, Mr W. R. Johnson. OTWAY SETTLEMENT Thu chairman reported having visited the Otway settlement aloug with other members of the Board, that they had mot several settlers and had looked over the settlement with a view to alleviating the position of the settlors regarding the cxcossivo water aud the need for outlets. it was thought that little real benefit could b 3 given until tho Wai ,0a river was lowered. The engineer reported that several sets of pipes were proving too small to take the large volume of water which the new drains were carrying aud suggested that largor culverts be put in iu the place of these pipes. Resolved that-the engineer apply to tho Piako County for permission to do the work where necessary and also that the settlers affected be approached with a view to boating a portion of the oost of enlarging the culverts.

SLIPS Mr Fitton brought up tlm question of slips iu the Board's outlets, aud moved that the nearest member he empowered to have same dim It- with. Secpudcd by Mr Horn and carried. RIVER EM LAN KM ISN'T Mr Davey outlined a scheme by which a few settlers along tho western batik of the Waihou river could assist in erecting stop banks on their own properties. It was decided that the system he adopted aud au agreement executed under tho Board’s Common Seal. REFERENCE ItOAKU A request from tho Paeroa Chamber of Commerce for a conference of local bodies was dealt with. Mr Horn finally moved that it was thought that the T.V. Reference Board met the wishes of the Chamber. Seconded by Mr Davey, aud caniud. ALIEN LA HOUR it was decided that no action ho taken aud that the Board considers that the Government of this Dominion is fully alive to its responsiblities, aud the handling of such au important subject should he left solely to such a well iiifonnol authority as the Government to deal with iu its own initiative.
