NO CONTEST THREE CANDIDATES WITHDRAW j His Worship the Mayor announced t during the leoture in the Theatre t Royal on Friday evening that a satis- ( factory arrangement had been come to j by which there will be no borough j election this week, three of eleven j candidates nominated having agreed , to withdraw, thus saving the expense ] of an election. The three gentlemen ( coocerned are Messrs Geo. Hedge, J. , A. Clothier and F. W. Firkin. This , leaves Messrs C. A. Arthur, G. Cornish, J. M. Bell, J. D. Morison, W. Mackie, 0. A. Sellars, H. T. Willis aud Geo. Alley as the eight councillors to be elected. His Worship also announced that the whole of those gentlemen had signified their intention of presenting their nomination fees, each £3, to the Y.M.O A War Fund. He commended those gentlemen for their patriotic spirit, aud also the retiring three candidates for making this course possible. He would also be glad to hand over his own cheque for £3 towards the fund, making £27 in all, for a deserving object. (Applause.) Messrs J. A. Clothier and G. W. Horn, chairman and member respectively, of the Elstow Drainage Board, had also donated their travelling allowance, amounting to about £4 each. Mr Stanley said Te Aroha’s contribution would thus be about £l6O, and he hoped the Auckland City councillors would take a leaf out i of Te Aroha’s book, and thus twentyi oue further contributions to the fund would be available. (Applause). Mr Smeeton, in acknowledging the gifts, said the idea regarding the councillors was most unique, and he had wired to Auckland Y.M.C.A. to endeavour to have aspirants for muni- | cipal honors in the city and suburbs ’ do likewise. He anticipated that the J innovation would be generally adopted.
