MINING NEWS. Thames, Sept. 24.
Saxon.- Mr Thos. Dur.lop has, as stated in a telegram in your last issue, been appointed to the rnanagementof thismine. The instructions of the diiectois that all hands should be discharged was duly carried out on Saturday, the afternoon shift not being allowed to go on. A new staff of men has now been engaged, and work was resumed underground as u&ual this morning., Several of the old hands were re-engaged. The contractors for the extension of the drive at No. 5 level have given up 'their contract, and it is probable that fresh ten ders will be invited. Trenton. — The manager has received tenders for sinking the .shaft a further 100 feet, and forwarded them to the directors in Auckland. Caledonian. — It is understood here that in consequence of his appointment to th"c. management of the Saxon mine, Mr Dunlop. has tendered his resignation to the direc-. tors of the Caledonian. Plan ofGoldfield.— Mr Burgess, Clerk! of the Warden's Court, has received an excellent plan of the Thames goldfield proper from Mr Percy Smith, Assistant Surveyor- General, by whom it has been compiled. The licensed holdings and special claims in existence under the old Act are distinguished from those granted 'under the new Act by being difleicntly coloured, and the plan shows the whole of the holdings up to date. New Fearnought. — The country in the crosscut remains unchanged. The face of the crosscut is at present a complete network of stringers varying in width from s 1 inch to 2 inches. The largest contains excellent mineral and a considerable amount of silica and zinc blend. The crosscut is in a distance of 58 feet from the main diive. Trenton. — The country on the western end of the shaft is very hard, but on the eastern end it is fair snooting ground. Gem. — Up to Saturday the work had produced about 301b picked stone. New Prince Imperial. — Last week a few pound of picked stone were obtained from the top stope on the hanging wall of No. 1 reef. Tributers : Trenwith and party crushed 9 loads of quartz last week for the return of 15oz sdwt of melted gold.
