LECTURE BY R. BAVIN.

On Wednesday evening last the Her ! JR. Bavin, from Auckland delivered a lecture on the "Divine Claim* of the Bible" in the Wesleyau Church, Te Aroha ; Her T J. Wills in the chair. The lecturer handled his subject in a most masterly and interesting manner, »nd in the course of his remarks referred to the great antiquity of of the Bible, its latest writer haying passed away 1800 years «go, whilst its earliest writers. l pfeceeded Herodotus 1000 year 9. No book could compare with it as regards sublimity^ it inculcated all high and holy duties, and was entirely a unique 1 production. The lecturer next referred to the amount of opposition it had endured ami survired, and which no other than a divinely-inspired book could have endured, stating it now held a higher position than ever before. It had been cast into the crucible df logical iiivestigation, which in every form had been applied to it. History had tried It and wherever accurately interpreted had been fouud to harmonise with bible facts. It had been tried by the sciences, astronomy, and geology; and the researches of antiquarians had been brought to bearj all which researches had gone to strengthen the 1 claim's of the Bible: it was composed of some 60 different books, on which sortie' 40 different writers had been engaged) allj however, having been gdtded by the one great master mind. The Bible shows us our true likeness, it hiakes bad men good, and shows them there is only one way to be truly happy* Men of the world, follow the thitigs of the World, which one after another they would rind bubble and burst; but the bible never yet disappointed any who took it as theirguide. It was not only j the Gdd of book*, but God's own bdok. The British and Foreign Bible Society had printed the Bible in 250 different languages, and issued millions upon millions of copies all over the world.. A heatty vote of thanks to the 1 lecturer was proposed by Kef. J. Marshall,' seconded by Mr Ilotfy and the meeting concluded by singing the Ddkology.
