HORSE RACE.
A PhtViTi match between two local horses this week excited considerable interest amongst local sportsmen. The event came off oh Wednesday evening last at half-pasb six, and was between Mr W. Sampson's (Wafordngomai) mars Black Ros&, aged, ridden by Jas. Clarke, and Mr T. Tierney's (Te Aroha) •ged horse Auctioneer, ridden by -*• Cockhfcad, of Hamilton. Distance* bncte and a 'quarter round the Te Aroha racecourse (one mild), the stakes being £10 a-side. At the time appointed for this start folly 100 people must have been present, and considerable betting took place-, Black Hose being 1 the favoii ite-, 3 to 2 being freely given at the post. Mr G. Graves acted as starter and Mr J!J. Pavitt, as jtulgt. A good start was effected j the horses kept well together for the first quarter of * mile^ when Auctioneer began to forge ahead, and steadily increased his l^ad^ never being afterwards overtaken, and won as he liked by a number of lengths. Time, 2 rains. The witlner was purchased within the past month at a cattle and horse tale held at Paeroa by Mr J. f\ Cocks, was formerly the prdperly of Mr John H. Moore, Waihi, and is entered for the hurdle and steeplechase at the Thames Races.
