BOROUGH OF TAIHAPE.

Mr. Wrightson, in responding to the toast of “Local Bodies," at Tradesmen’s Association meeting on Mondaynight, made a spirited defence of the Taihape Borough Council. He said the life of a Councillor was not always a pleasant one. If a man lives on a certain road he expects that road to be put in order, even if it takes the whole of the Council’s money to do it. The Council had to consider the expenditure of its funds as to benefit the whole, not a part. He could sea what was required to be done in the borough; probably uon e knew better than he what ought to be done.. Thousands of pounds could be spent in improving the borough. He was in favour of a special loan, even to a large i amount, to put the town of Taihape on the footing it ought to be. The Council had done as much as it could with its limited means, and it was at present rated to the limit allowed by law.' Taihape was in the Centre of a rich, if not, the richest district in the Dominion. It had countrycapable of carrying from 2S to 4 sheep to the acre, and the future of the town depended to a certain extent on the operations of bodies like the Tradesmen’s Association. It was their duty to watch as far as in them lies the progress of the town, and assist it. As far as the Borough Council was concerned, they would do their utmost f 6 assist the town to achieve the future its unique position warranted. The Association should hold meetings to inquire into matters of interest, bring their conclusions to a concrete form, and if laid before the Borough Council he could assure them they would get that body’s earnest attention. (Applause.)
