THE NAMING OF OUR STREETS.

To the Editor. Sir. —I was rather surprised at the parochial spirit, which some of our councillors adopted in the discussion on street-naming. If it is necessary for us to go outside native birds names, or Maori names, it would be more in accordance with the fitness of things, if we adopted some of those names which have become famous by the heroic deeds of our boys, and their life sacrifice. What would be more inspiring to us all, especially our school boys, than to have Station Street, called Cornwall Street, after the hero of the battle of Jutland. The calling of certain roads after the person who made those roads is open to objection as thoj r were made for the purpose of increasing the market value of the property which they proposed to sell and not altogether for the public benefit. —I am, etc,, W. J. H. McCORMICK.
