ST. PATRICK’S DAY SPORTS.

An event of great importance; to the town and district at ; Monday’s sports will be the baby show. Doctor Mary Dowling, of Mangaweka, has kindly agreed to act as judge in this important competition. The prize for the best baby will be rewarded for merit and not for most votes as has been the case in similar contests lately. Taihape and district has -earned a reputation for the excellence of its produce and stock of all descriptions, and it is safe to say that it can produce the all-important article of as good if not better quality than in other parts of the Dominion. In any case the verdict of Judge Dowling on this point will be eagerly aivaited for on Monday. Mothers are requested to bring their babies' along and while, competing for Mr. tt. Parker’s trophy at the same time assist the Patriotic cause.

The tradesmen’s chop, in which many well-known local identities are competing, promises to be the most exciting item on Monday’s programme If all those who have nominated aio as sincere in their desire to sever the 9-inch white pine log as they a. „ ,0 assist the Patriotic Fund, then, one of the best (or perhaps worst) exhibitions of chopping seen on the “Rec’* will eventuate. The nominationsrange from the local M.P. to a Chinese fruiterer. Complaints have been received from the caretaker of the local Domain of damage to trees; it was put down to the small boy’nuisance at first, but a well-known local resident was caught red-handed on his second tree. In view of the patriotism oozing from the would-be axeman ,the matter has been hushed up. He will be on view on Monday, trying conclusions with a 9-inch white pine log.
