Violent cannonading was heard between Landsort and Gottskasando on Wednesday night. A large German torpedoer was seen in the morn, ing steaming rapidly southward. Sir Douglas Haig reports that the British advance north of Bazentin and Bonguoval line has pushed on to Bois des Fonreaux, from whence they drove the enemy during the night. Tin* enemy counter attacked after an intense bombardment with gas shells. They succeeded in effecting an entry north of the wood, but failed to dislodge our troops in the southern half. Elsewhere positions are unchanged.

(Received 11.45) PARIS, July 2!. A communique states late on Wednesday the enemy counter attacked south of Soyccourt. The batallions which led the assault were caugt in our curjtain fire of raitralleuscs and fell back in disorder on both sides of the Somme, We repulsed with the bayonet a strong party of enemy raiders in the Chaulnes region. During the last 24 hours an air squadron bombarded stations at Gentians,' Marslatour, Brieulles and Cour Junction with large projectiles. The Germans bombarded the open towns of Baccarah, Luncville, noted for reprisals.

STRANGE AEROPLANE ACCIDENT,

A strange aeroplane accident happened in Southampton water. A large vessel was outward • bound, while three seaplanes were manoeuvring overhead. Flying low, one suddenly swerved and crashed into the main mast, breaking down the steamer’s wireles s rigging. The seaplane fell on the deck, the pilot being killed and a seaman seriously injured. DISTINGUISHED NELSON LAD. KILLED IN ACTION. I NELSON, This Day. Word is received that Lieut. Athol Hudson, son of the late Dr Hudson and Mrs Hudson, of Tapawera, has been killed in action. Hudson was an old boy of the Nelson College, an<S Waitaki High School. He was selected in 1915 as the Rhodes scholar from the Victoria College.
