A 'German communique says: The English attacked in considerable force positions west and north of Fromelles. Counter-attacks threw them back from points pentrated. The English again penetrated Longueval and Delville Farm, Counterattacks compelled them to retire, through they still hold portions of the village and the farm. Anglo-French attacks on the whole front from Foureaux Wood to the Somme began this morning. The first attack was broken. The French in the afternoon made two unfruitful attacks in the region of Belloy. They were thrice repulsed this morning in the Estrees-Hoyicourt sector.

The Russians made unsuccessful attacks on Ickaukeyu road, south-east

of Riga. The Austrians north of Sokul drove the Russians out of their front po sitions. They then retired to their

positions. The Germans advanced their positions south-west of Luck.
