A very wide circle of friends will learn with deepest sorrow and regret that Mr R. T. Batley, of Moawhango, has received a cable from the military authorities advising him that hig son, Piriau, was killed in action in Prance on the 10th of this month. Mr and Mrs Batley will have the heartfelt sympathy of almost every man and woman in this district in their great sorrow'. Even though a. life is given in the noblest cause in defending the very life and home of the country to which he belongs, that dees not stay the pangs that parents must naturally experience on the less of a good son, and although feelings of pride may arise at the nobleness of the sacrifice, they are overborne by a bitterness that will not be repressed. Every patriot will congratulate the parents on the sacrifice made their: Empire, and every humane ; tbeing in their unassuagcable grief in the loss of a truly manly an ( ] good son.
