i The war and the dry weather have in combination caused a remarkable shrinkage in the business at the country markets (says the Christchurch Star). The monthly sale at Hawarden lon Thursday was perhaps the limit. There were about 40 farmers and two auctioneers present to deal with an entry cf two fat hoggets, which sold at 23/ each, a cow which realised £lO, and four pigs, which made 14/6 each. The limited business imposed early closing, on the drinking bar, the conditional license being granted with a proviso that it shall be shut down within an hour after .the finish of the sale. A member qf the main expeditionary force now at/Gallipoli writes interest- v ingly to a friend in Now Plymouth. His home, he says, "is a dug-out in the headquarters gully. The view from my house is perfectly beautiful, the blue Mediterranean, or Gulf of Saros to be correct, with the Islands of Imbros and Scmothrace in the distance. The sunsets are simply gorgeous. I i don't wonder that Byron and other poetical ducks went into raptures about these parts. Below us is the beach, i pretty little place, an ideal spot for bathing. Just at present, of course, it is covered with stores and carts s'nd guns, and the million things that :re' necessary for running the show. Piers have been built, and at times* it looks like a busy little seaport towr. Bathing is our one joy—when the Turks let us. At first their shooting'was so erratic that you were quitfI saft. and it was a not unusual thing to sei thousands of chaps splashing about tc their heart's content. Now things pre different, and when you go down /or a swim you do so at considerable risk, as the Turks have got the range to a nicety."
