CARNIVAL NOTES.

if (-BY THE 0.5.) The whirl of gaeity still continues —in fact, it is only commencing. This 1 afternoon there will be a gift auction sale at Mrs D,'tshwood's in support of "Out Boys" candidature, while to-mor-row evening the friends of t!he "Red Cross" representative will hold a social and dunce in the Town Hall. On Thursday afternoon a garden party will be held at Mrs J. Barsby's grounds to assist Miss Carpenter's chances, and on Friday evening Turangarere will be en fete to do honour to the same young lady. The function at TurangaTere will take the form cf a concert and dance. A fine programme of musical and elo-, cutionairy items has been arranged (the famous Ta;'!hape Spoof Band will be in attendance) and, I understand, special tram arrangements have been made. There should be a great gathering . at the Town Hall on Saturday evening next, the occasion being a grand con- j cert by the Wanganui Brass Band. I learn that this famous band will give a recital at the Recreation Grounds on Sunday afternoon, and a sacred concert, in t/he Town Hall in the evening. So we may all look forward to a rare musical treat.

Next Monday the friends of Miss Fcrde will hold a wild revelry at the Town Hall for the purpose of gathering a little more bullion. The festivtiy will assume the form of a concert and dance, and Mataroa and Ruanui—not forgetting Rangawaea—will be there to a man and woman. So Mr O'Callaghan informs me, and he should know. ° A meeting of the General Carnival Committee Willi be |held in the supper room of the Town Hall this evening. As there is some important business to transact members are particularly requested ot attend. One of the returned wounded soldiers blew into my office this morning, and told me a rather good story anent a cc-rlain "Tommy" at Gallipoli. The eon of Mars had been placed under arrest for insobriety. He stoutly denied, how < ver. being under the influence of drink when arrested, despite the overwhelming evidence to the contrary. Under cross-examination the offending warrior admitted that he said to the arresting sergeant, "I'sh going sniping!" and he was armed with a nine and a lighted lantern! To-morrow evening a meeting of Mrs Gilchrist's committee wall be held in the Torere schoolroom at 7.30. I understand that arrangements will be made at the gathering to hold a monster picnic at an early date to assist the financial prospects- of th e "Utiku representative.

I heard a w-bisper this morning that the Mangaweka candidate, Miss Eng, is going very strong, and when the psychological moment arrives her suppc rtf rs will "make no race of it."

Mrs R. W. Smith's ladies' cor.mittee will meet this evening in the sntfpcr room at 8.15 p.m.

A basket social will be held at Mataroa on Friday evening next. Elaborate arrangements are being made for the function and. a* big gathering is anticipated. It is certain tlhat Miss Forde ? carnival account will be n .o - siiderably strengthened by the Activity.' The bullion gatherers are still working hard and some good hauls are reported.
