BONUS FOR STEWARDS.

UNION'S DEMANDS REFUSED. Press Association. WELLINGTON, December 28. The Arbitration Court has awarded the cooks and stewards a bonus of 10/-' per month, and cadejs 3/6 per- month-. The application was for £2 per month, all round. The Court considers that cooks and stewards, by reason of several increases, have kept, pace with the cost of living. The majority of the Court was inclined to dismiss the application for a bonus, but decided to grant a bonus - slightly less than that awarded in industries properly so-called. Inasmuch as the men are provided with food and accommodation by their employers, the latter should not be compelled to pay the full bonus, as they already bear a portion of the increase in the cost of living. The Court had not always recognised the same principle, but the question was open for consideration in future cases, dealing, for instance,-with hotel'waiters. The Wellington tramwaymen were awarded a 3/-» increase in the hourly rate, not to be computed on overtime.
