ROWING.

NOTES AND COMMENTS. FIXTURES. Jan. I—Lyttelton Regatt*. Jan. I—Bluff Harbour Regatta. Jan. I—EHesmere Aquatic Club's Regatta. Feb. I—Christchurch1 —Christchurch Regatta; Picton Regatta (New Zealand Championships). Feb. 2—Wellington Regatta. Feb. s—Kaiapoi Regatta. Entries totalling nearly 70 in number been received for the Lyttelton Regatta, which is to take place, as usual, on New Year's Day. The Canterbury, Union, Avon, Akaroa, Cure and Sumner clubs are to be represented. Good entries have been received for the motor-boat race, and the owners of four hydroplanes have signified their intention of racing. Training Notes. Canterbury R.C. crews are persevering with their training. Hewer and Parsons are going moderately well for the pair-oar event. Parson has developed a few faults which require eradication. He does not seem altogether at home in pair-oar work. The No. 2 maiden pair (Beaven and Triggs) are putting up a very good showing, and stand a chance of giving a good account of themselves _at Lyttelton. Knight and Guthrie, in the senior pairs, are handicapped by lack of weight. In the junior pair-oar event, Johnston and Morgan should achieve something. They are rowing a pretty stroke at present, with plenty of pace. Godfrey and Cowlishaw, the club's double scullers in the youths' class, are daily improving in form. Considering the short time which has elapsed since their debut as oarsmen was msjde, their progress has been surprising. R. R. Spooner is "having a cut'' at the youths' singles event on January 1. Some time ago the C'.R.A. made an application to the Christchurch City Council to have a casual growth of. willows removed between Cowlishaw's Corner and the mile post. This was on account of the growth hindering the vision of coaches working on the banks. The president of the association (Mr F. D. Kesteven) stated at the . association's last meeting that he had' been in communication with the Town '• Clerk and had arranged to see the Superintendent of Reserves to point out to hii>' vhat is wanted. There was no occask -i to fell any trees, and the clearing work could be accomplished in a very short while.

The Akaroa Boating Club has entered the following crews for the Lyttelton regatta: —Youths' Pair Oar and Double Sculls: Bader Hammond and A. Parris. Maiden Pair Oar and Double Sculls: FYed Newton and H. Pool. Junior Pair Oar and Double Sculls: A. Sergison and T. McGuire. Youths' Single Sculls: B. Hammond and A. Parris. A single sculling race, open to youths, for a five-guinea trophy, presented by jlr J. S. Vial, was easily won by Baden Hammond, who was the winner of the Cleary Shield at Lyttelton last New Year's Day. At the last meeting of the Akaroa Boating Club Committee the secretan r announced that Miss Norah Lelievre, on behalf of the lady supporters, had offered to present the club with a new Association clinker four-oar boat and set of oars complete. Mr F. D. Kesteven, at the recent meeting of the C.R.C., pointed out an anomaly in the programme for the Wellington Regatta. At the top of the column showing the amounts awarded for the races is printed "donations," whereas at the bottom there is "total prize moneys, £149." Thus is the rule

against prize moneys being given completely ignored. Frank Stewart, of the C.R.C., is temporarily retiring—on his doctor's advice—from active rowing. He will be very much missed. His work on the river has been invaluable to the club. Here's wishing him a speedy return to activity! Pin well is taking Stewart's place in the crows for Lyttelton. Some good finishes were witnessed in the U.R.C. Trial Pairs and New Members' Double Sculls. The former event was carried by P. Cairns and N. Moulin, and the latter by L. Blumsky and F. L. Booth| jun. River Clubs' Boats. Owing to the racing boats belonging to the various river clubs not arriving back in Christchurch until late last week, no representative crews from the north will compete at the Port Chalmers Regatta. It was decided at a meeting of the C.R.A. to write, thanking Messrs M. Kearney (captain of the Akaroa Club) and G. Lelievre for the car.e exi pended by members of the Akaroa Boating Club in receiving and sending away the boats. A very breezy social evening was held on Saturday at the C.R.C. boatsheds. Among other events was the official presentation of "unofficial prizes \js«n in the vicinity of the Hilltop. ' The programme " for the Kaiapoi Regatta was' approved by the Canterbury Rowing Association at a meeting last Thursday, It was decided at the same timfe to write to the Regatta Committee, pointing out that, through the narrowness of the river,. only three crews could be aly lowed to start together in any ow event. It was further decided to recommend that provision be made for the umpire to follow the races in a motorboat, and that a proper sighting line be, provided at the finishing post, to enable the judges to cany out their work accurately. Northern News. A northern correspondent of The Sun forwards some rowing news from the j other island. Rowing men on the Wa-1 nganui, he says, have had a busy time! during the week just ended. The Aromoho Boating Club has been particularly active in the contests for the Luxiord Double Sculls and a number of heats were rowed. The. Aromoho Club's "At Home" proved a popular function and quite a large number of those interested in sport attended. Some four-oared sprints took place, and the closest finishes seen on the river for years resulted. In no instance were the crews divided by more than half canvas at the finish. The final resulted in a dead heat between A. Godfrey and G. Dowling. The Gisborne Ro'wing Clubs final race in the B grade and the semi-final in the I A grade of the second trial fours provided really good racing. The B grade final was contested by crews comprising W. Hankey (stroke)J A. C. Arthur, E. Brosnahan and A. Rowley; and T. Hay (stroke), W. Swinnerton, F. Davis and H. Martin. The race was won by the former crew, with Kinder as cox. The race was hard fought, Hankey only establishing a length's lead a couple of hundred yards from the post. Hay's crew could 'not answer the leader's spurt, and was defeated by a length and a-half.

The semi-final of the A grade was rowed between I. J. Quigley (stroke), L. Clare, T. H. Jones and H. Maynard, and C. R. Moore (strokS), R. McGregor, T. Neill, and D. Hennessy. Roddick was cox for the former crew and Albrecht for the latter. A fine race ensued until a short distance from home when Moore's crew gave way under the strain and was unable to finish with the ginger of Quigley's, about two lengths of clear water separating the two boats.

The Clifton Rowing Club at Waitara has now got going, and its. operations

promise to be very successful. Mr A. 'W. Ogle has been elected president for the ensuing year, and Mr Hr Spurdle secretary. A good deal of interest is being evinced by members.and a good season is expected. Some interesting rowing was witnessed in Auckland harbour, when members of the Auckland Eowing Club took part in the Matt Carr trophies. The weather was good, and the water calm. In the final the contest was between K. Murray, O'Hanlon, and P. Campbell, O'Hanlon being stroke of the winning j boat, the crew of which comprised O'Hanlon (stroke), Sims, * Bishop and A. G.'Barker, with V. Thomas (cox). The Bankart Fours of the St. George's Rowing Club induced good racing, the crews being reduced to crews stroked by Surman and Bees. Both got a gooid start and kept together for threequarters of the way. Then Surman quickened his stroke and drew away from Bees, winning bv one length and a-half. TARRA.
