LOCAL AND GENERAL.
At the meeting of the Christchurch Tramway Board, Mr W. J. Walter said that several persons had voiced complaints regarding the slow running of the "express" to New Brighton. The '' express,'' it was stated, completed the journey in only two minutes better time than the ordinary trams. Mr A. S. Taylor said that the tram was an express in name only; it was merely for the convenience of residents in the outer area. The chairman (Hon. J. Barr, M.L.C.), said that the speed attained by the cars now was a reasonable one, in view of the heavy loads, and it would not be wise to travel faster. The secretary (Mr F. Thompson) said the letters "exp." were used in the absence of a better abbreviation to indicate a car with a non-stop run. At the annual meeting of the Christ's College Old Boys' Association, it was unanimously decided to support the protest being made by tie aetingneadmaster against the proposed abolition by the Defence Department of the distinctive puggarees worn by secondary school Cadets. It was also decided to invite the co-operation of the principal secondary schools in the Dominion in the protest. The secretary of the association has now been advised by the Brigadier-General in charge of Administration that instructions have been issued to all officers commanding districts that Cadets of secondary schools may retain their distinctive Cadet puggarees, the cost of which is to be provided from the maintenance grants. The Defence Department will, however, continue to stock only rdain puggarees for Cadets, and these will be available for any secondary school Cadets.
