ORGANISED PILFERING ON LONDON DOCKS.
BUSINESS MEN ASK FOR SPECIAL DETECTIVE FORCE. (A. & N.Z.) (Rec. December 6, 8.5 a.m.) liONDON, December 4. A committee of the London Chamber of Commerce which has been investigating pilfering from the docks reports that an enormous increase has taken place since the War, involving increase in insurance premiums. The losses are not due to petty, individual thefts, but to operations of well-organised gangs of thieves and receivers. One shipping company is paying £250,000 annually for claims. The committee asks that the Home Secretary provide a special detective force, trained in the habits and methods of the river thieves. '
