It is expected that the Hon. G. J. Anderson (Minister of Internal Affairs) will not be able to leave hospital for another fortnight. Mr E. Cuthbert, engineer and secretary to the Christchurch Drainage Board, has been confined to his bed since July 21. He is making progress towards recovery. The death lias occurred in Wellington of Mr AVellington Raymond, who in his earlier years was a figure in the musical life of "that city. He was 81 years of age at time of demise. Colonel G. F. C. Campbell, Secretary and Paymaster-General of the New Zealand Treasury, has arrived in England on his mission to make inquiries on certain financial matters on behalf of the Dominion. At last evening's meeting of the S.P.C.A., a motion of sympathy was passed with the centre's treasurer, Mr W. J. Trusttum, who has been compelled to take a four months' rest on account of illness. The Rev. E. P. Blamires, chairman of the New Zealand Committee of the Australasian Student Christian Movement, has left for Melbourne, to attend the General Committee meeting, which will be held in that city on August 27. Captain George Hooper, of the New Zealand Government Marine Department, who has been in England in connection with the selection of a suitable war vessel to replace the boys' training ship Amokura, returns to the Dominion per the Wiltshire, leaving Liverpool on July 10. At the Public Works Department workshops, a presentation was made to Mr William Simins, who has been on the staff for a period of 12 years. Mr AirdL Inspector of Works, presented Mr Simttis, on behalf of the workshop employees, with a handsomely engraved silver teapot, which was suitably acknowledged by the recipient. Mr and Mrs Simms and family left last night on the first stage of their trip to England, and expect to be away for some 12 months.

Mr J. Jacobs, who is well known in cricket circles in Christclmrch, has resigned from the service of P. and D. Duncan, in which he had been engaged, for 20 years, in order to enter into business on his own account at Lauriston. A presentation was made to him by the employees of the firm, Mr A. E. Hooper, who handed over the gift, referring to the high esteem in which Mr Jacobs is held as a worker and a man, and stating that Mr Jacobs carried with him into his new venture the best wishes of all his fellow-workers and a large circle of friends.

The parishioners of Merivale met last evening to farewell the Rev. Harold and Mrs Purchas,. who are about to leave for Ceraldine. The Vicar (the Rev Archdeacon P. B. Haggitt) expressed his'appreciation of the services of Mr Purchas in the parish, and his regret at losing him. The Rev. Canon Cocks and Mr AV. C. Bean also spoke, testifying to the fine work done by Mr and Mrs Purchas at Merivale. The former was presented with a. well-filled wallet of notes, and the latter with a valuable opal ring, Mr Bean making the presentations on behalf of the parishioners. The Rev. S. F. Collier, an ex-president of the English AVesleyan Conference, and a well-known missioner, is on a visit to New Zealand, and will lecture en Saturday evening, in the Durham Street Church, and will also preach in the St. Albans Church on Sunday morning, and in Durham Street Church on Sunday evening. Mr Collier has had a notable ministerial career, especially as a missioner in the city of Manchester, England. For 35 years he has been superintendent of the largest Christian mission in the world, and has carried on all kinds of social enterprises connected with it. He is going to the Australasian Methodist Conference as the official representative of the English AA r esleyau Conference.
