STRIKE AT STATE MINES.

A SETTLEMENT EFFECTED. Press Association. GREYMOUTH, August 17. The general manager of the State Mines, Mr J. A. James, on his arrival here, met representatives of the Stale Miners' Union and Railway Department in conference. A settlement was effected after considerable discussion. The terms are those originally submitted to*the departments concerned by the Miners' Union on Wednesday last, providing for miners' trains departing and returning not earlier than 6.35 a.m. or later than 4.40 p.m. respectively, and being purely passenger trains, suburban fare rates to apply. The union later to-day met at Runanga and accepted the terms of settlement unanimously, and agreed to resume work to-morrow morning.
