RUGBY FOOTBALL.

THE CANTERBURY UNION. A meeting of the Management Committee of the Canterbury Bugby Union was held last evening. There were present: Messrs S. F. Wilson (president), A. Dey, A. Duggan, C. Buchanan, G. P. Payne, W. B. Fuller, E. W. Brittan, A. Barrett, V. J. Gamble, C. Allard,. B. E. Boag, F. D. Kesteven, E. Beattie, C. S. McCully and A. McPhail. It was decided that the junior representative teams which are to be sent, on August 28, to play the North Canterbury Sub-uniou at Sefton, Ellesmere at Leeston, and Malvern at Darfield, should travel by motor-cars. Messrs McCully and Kesteven and the secretary (Mr H. E. Neale) were appointed a committee, which is to make arrangements. Mr Kesteven was appointed manager of the team which is to play against Ellesmere, Mr Barrett manager of the team to play against Malvern, and Mr Brittan manager of the team to go to Sefton, one of the selectors of the junior represen tative teams to be associated with each manager. The Ellesmere Sub-union asked that a team not higher than third grade should be sent to play'its junior representatives at Leeston on August 28. — The committee regretted that it could not accede to the request, as it will be playing-off its third-grade final, and there will be so many other teams away.

The University and Merivale clu'os were granted permission to send teams to the Ashburton County Eugby Union >s seven-a-side tourney on Thursday. The Marists Club's application for confirmation of its appointment of Mr G. P. Payne as manager of its team which is to leave for the West Coast next week was granted. The chairman wished the Marists Club good lnck in its matches.

An application from the Marists Club for permission to play O. Batchelor, who had been suspended for two playing Saturdays for striking another player, but had not completed that term, through rain preventing matches being played last Saturday, was refused.

The Boys' High School team was granted permission to travel to Dunedin to play in the inter-schools' tourney, which is to be held there on August 30 and September 2, with Mr W. M. Stewart as manager of the team. . The Waitaki Boys' High School asked for a grant from the "gate" at its recent match against Christchureh Bo3's' High School, toward its team's travelling expenses in connection with that match. Those expenses totalled about £6l.—Mr A. Dey pointed out, however, that the Christchureh Boys' High School team, which has to travel to play Waitaki each second year, has to pay its own expenses, sometimes with assistance from old boys of the 'school, and it does not ask for assistance from the North Otago Sub-union, under whose jurisdiction Waitaki is. Waitaki should bear its share of the burden. It was decided that no grant should be made. A grant of £l3 10/ —Jha amount

asked for—was made to the Christchurch Boys' High School to cover the cost of entertaining the Waitaki team, and other expenses in connection with the Waitaki match.

Messrs McPhail, Brittan and P. 11. Goodsir were appointed a committee to arrange referees for representative matches. Messrs Kesteven, McCully and Boag were appointed an entertainment committee.

In reporting on the Canterbury team's southern tour, Mr C. S. McCully, manager of the team, made special reference to the hospitality of the Southland Rugby Union and other football enthusiasts in Invercargill, and also referred to the excellent conduct of the Canterbury team.—Mr McCully was congratulated on his management of the team. It was decided to send letters of appreciation to the southern unions which -were visited.

The Competitions Committee reported that some of the lower grade competitions would have to be continued on days set down for first-grade representative matches. In the second grade, there was only a point between Lyttelton and North Canterbury. If Lyttelton defeats North Canterbury next Saturday it will win the grade premiership. The third and fourth grade competitions would not be decided in less than two or three Saturdays. The fifthgrade competition had closed, with Boys' High School as the winner.
