AN INFANT'S DEATH. An inquest was held yesterday by Mr S. B. McCarthy, S.M., Coroner, on the body of a six-weeks-old infant, Stephen Henry Burt, who died on Saturday night while sleeping with its mother at ;.V> Andover Street, Merivale. The mother, Mrs Hilda Annie Burt, of Swannanoa, stated that she retired about 9 p.m. on Saturday, and went to sleep with the child resting on her arm. When she awoke about 8 a.m., it was dead. The child had suffered from a severe cold almost since its birth. Dr 11. L. Widdowson said that, in his opinion, deatli was due to broncho-pneumonia. The Coroner returned a verdict in these terms, and added the following rider: — "I would again direct attention to the danger arising from a mother sleeping with her infant —though in the present case At-.-, hj was not due to suffocation." The police have received advice that the body of an old age pensioner, Michael McAvey, was found on a roadside, about four miles from Methven, this morning. The deceased was last seen on Thursday, when his horse and trap were found' by Mr McNeil, straying on the road.
