NEWS IN BRIEF.

The By-laws Committee of the Christchurch City Council is inviting organisations and others concerned in the proper regulation of trnflic in the city to semi delegates to a conference to be held in the City Council Chamber at 7.fio p.m. to-morrow. The following telegram, concerning railway improvements at Christchurch and Lyttelton, has been received by Mr P. B. Climie, organiser of the Canterbury Progress League, from Mr ,T. Mc- ! Combs, M.P.: —"I interviewed Mr McVilly to-day regarding questions affecting my electorate, and he referred to the Christchurch deputation, and expressed surprise at the attitude of the Christchurch newspapers. He stated that he thought he made it clear that the railway improvements W Lyttelton and Christchurch were urgent and imperative, and there would shortly be further tangible evidence of the department 's activities at both Lyttelton and Christchurch." In welcoming Judge IT. V. Borst, of i New York, head of the Independent Order of Oddfellows on Friday, the Mayor of Christchurch (Dr H.'T. J. Thaeker, M.P.) brought forward a suggestion that friendly societies should put the medical side of their work on a different basis. The supplying of medi'cine, he felt, should be separated from I the "doctors' work"—by which he meant the attendance of doctors upon members of any particular society. A board of doctors might then be set up, and a member might be allowed to choose whichever doctor he wished to attend kirn. The doctor would be paid by the lodge at a special rate, which would enable the member to have medical attention at .less expense than otherwise. Mr E. Eobb, Grand Master of the Independent Order of Oddfellows for New Zealand, replied that the Wellington lodges of the Order had already instituted such a system. The member chose his doctor, who was paid by the lodge. The lodge then settled with the member. Palmerstbn North had also adopted the scheme, and Auckland was in the process of adopting it. In this way it would not be long before the differences between the lodges and the medical profession were eliminated —at any rate, so far as the I.Q.F. was concerned. Mr C. J. Talbot, Deputy-Grand Master, remarked that a similar scheme had been adopted in Temuka 30 years ago. It was necessary, however, that any scheme of the kind should be on a sound actuarial basis.
