OLYMPIC GAMES.
THE FORMAL OPENING, AN IMPRESSIVE PROCESSION. By Cable. — Press Association. — Copyright. (A. & N.Z.) ANTWERP, Aug. 14. The formal opening of the Olympic Games at tho Stadium was attended with much ceremony. The booming of artillery and a huge crowd greeted the arrival of the King and Queen of the Belgians. All the competitors, led by the Australians and New Zealanders, and representing 28 countries, filed past King Albert, who was presented with addresses. The programme was interspersed with musical items by Swedish and Belgian choirs. The whole of the proceedings was marked by great enthusiasm. South Africa and America disputed the Australians' and New Zealanders' right to lead the procession, but eventually conceded their claim. RESULTS OF FIRST EVENTS. AUSTRALIANS PROMINENT. Australian and N.Z. Cabin Association. (RfC. Aug. 10, 11.30) ANTWERP, Ausr. 15. Kent and Hughes, of Australia, won their heats in the 400-metres hurdles in 57sec. They were defeated in the semi-finals. Walton W. Hunt won his heat -in i the 100 metres race.
