Mr y ßobert Roll arrived from Wellington by yesterday 's ferry steamer. Lieut.-Colonel D. Cossgrove, who lias been seriously ill, is making satisfactory progress.

The Administrator to the Government has appointed Mr Samuel Kennedy to be Inspector of Factories and Footwear as from August 18. Mr S. J. Collett, manager of the local Tourist Bureau, is on a month's leave, his place in the meantime being filled by Mr E. W. Marshall. Li out.-Colonel Eugene O'Neill, C.M.G., D.5.0., has been appointed Assistant Director of Medical Services for the Otago Military District. Mr Justice Herdman, Messrs David Jones and E. J. Howard, M.P.'s, and Mr W. Reeco were amongst the passengers to Lytteltou by the ferry steamer this morning.

The Rev. Canon Staples Hamilton will be inducted as vicar of St. Matthew's parish, St. Albans, on Wednesday next. Mr C. Dash, Town Clerk at Sumner, has secured the appointment of Town Clerk and manager to the Rangiora Borough Council. There were 21 applicants for the position. Mr J. Johnson, of Scfton, has been appointed by the Administrator of the Government, to be a trustee of the Sefton-Ashloy Drainage District, in place of Mr A. Johnstone, who has retired.

Mr Leonard Checkley, late manager New Zealand Farmers' Co-op. motor department, Ashburton, has returned to Christchurch, having been admitted a partner in Storey and Co.'s motor garage, of this city. As from October 1, 1<)20, Colonel P. C. Fenwick, C.M.G., will relinquish the appointment as Assistant-Director of Medical Services, Canterbury Military District, and will be posted to the Reserve of Officers.

Mr Walter V. Hobbs, .tour manager for Cliappell ami Co., London, is in Cfaristchurch, making arrangements for the season liere of Amy Evans, Welsh soprano, and Fraser Gange, Scottish baritone, which commences on August 24. hj

This year's candidate from Otago University for the Rhodes Scholarship is Mr 11. .1. My burn. He won a Junior University Scholarship, Senior University Scholarship in mathematics, and the Beverley Scholarship in advanced mathematics. He is a representative hockey player, and is connected with various university societies. He served in the War.

Mr J. V. Wilson, who has been placed in the first class of the Classical Tripos Part I (jicw regulations) at Cambridge, had a brilliant career at the Boys' High School and at Canterbury College, where he gained no fewer than three Senior Scholarships and obtained double firstclass honours in classics and history. He was afterwards for some time assistant-lecturer in classics at Auckland University, and is now a senior scholar of Trinity College, Cambridge. The Rhodes Scholarship Selection Committee will meet at Wellington on Friday next to select one of four candidates for the special War scholarship offered by the Rhodes Trustees. The candidate from Canterbury College is Mr S. P. McCallum, who has an excellent record both on the scholastic and in the athletic and social sides. Mr McCallum fought at Armentieres and at the first battle of the Somrae, where he was seriously wounded while occupying an advanced post. He is at present a master at the Boys' High School and president of the Canterbury College Students' Association.
