The Italian Government has invited Brigadier-General Rumaciotti, of Sydney, to address the principal Italian chambers of commerce. Brigadier-General Ramaciotti will also attend a meeting of the council of the British Chamber of Commerce of Italy at Leghorn in October. SHARES.

The delegates from New Zealand, consisting of Dr Cockayne, Government Biologist, and Messrs Buxton and Lindsay, which will endeavour to persuode the authorities to remove the embargo on New Zealand potatoes, have arrived, and are already busy interviewing Governmental heads and others interested. The High Commissioner reports under date August 7:— Meat.—The demand for English is limited, and the market is quiet. The average closing prices were:—Beef 1/5, mutton 1/9. lamb 2/-. There Is no change in the price of imported meat. Butter.—Supplies are decreasing and prices are firmer. Average quotations are: English £lB 9/6 per cwt.. Irish £l9 10/-. Cheese.—There is a poor demand. English is unchanged at £8 12/- to £9 2/- per cwt. Canadian spot is worth £7 12/- to £7 14/-, white £7 14/- to £7 18/-, and coloured (quotations 0.1.f.) £7 9/- to £7 14/-. The stock of New Zealand on August 6 was 17.831 crates as against 9274 at the same time last year. Hemp.—The manila market Is quiet, but steady. J grade, July-September shipment, has been sold at £63 16/-, other quotations uro unaltered. Manila receipts from January 1 to August 1 were 669,000 hales as against 637,000 for the same period lost year. The New Zealand market continues 'dull with no change in prices. NEW ZEALAND INSURANCE COMPANY. AUCKLAND. August 11. Al the half-yearly meeting of shareholders of the New Zealand Insurance Company, the directors' proposals, including payment of a dividend of eightpence per share, adding £30,000 to the reserve fund, and carrying 1 forward £72,214, w ere adopted.

BURNSIDE -MARKET. DUNEDIN, August 11. There wore fair supplies In nil departments at the Burnsidc stock sale to-dav, with the exception of pigs, which were in short supply, and sold at an advance. Sheep values were a good deal easier, and Rood cattle were sold at prices very satisfactory to vendors. .The decline in sheep prices was due to the fact that a large proportion of buyers were absent at the Grand National Meeting -in Christchurch. Fat Cattle.—There was a yarding 0f.475. The quality on the whole was not up to the usual standard. Competition was good throughout the sale, and prices were well up to late rates. Prime heavy bullocks realised up to £32, prime £24 5/- to £27, medium £l9 7/6 to £22, light and unfinished £l4 and upwards, prime heifers £l7 10/to £2l, medium £l4 10/- to £lB 10/-, light and aged £ll and upwards. Store Cattle.—A large yarding was offered. The. quality was very inferior, most of the entry being young cattle in backward condition. For this class competition was slack, and a reduction In values took place. For the small number of animals offered, which showed breeding, and were in forward condition, competition was good. Sheep.—There was a yarding of 3104 of fair quality. Competition was restricted to a few buyers, and prices suffered in consequence, values being fully 3/6 per head below last week's rates. Prime heavy weight wethers made 53/0 to 60/6, medium 43/- to 51/9, light and unfinished 33/- mid upwards, prime ewes 41/- to 40/3. medium 35/- to 40/-, light and aged 28/- ami upwards. Lambs.—There was a yarding of 173 of fair quality. Competition was good and prices were about equal to late rates, butchers' lambs selling from 25/- to 35/0.
