Mr R. B. Bennett returned to Christchurch from the north this morning. Mr Hamilton Hodges, the well-known singer, arrived in Christchurch from the north this morning. Messrs K. .1. Howard and George Witty, M.P.'s. left for Wellington by last night's ferry steamer. Mr Cuthbert Last (Timaru) and Mr W. F. Super (Christchurch) left for the north by last evenjng's ferry boat. Captain 11. G. Garland left by the Tahiti for Fiji, to take up his new appointment,as A.D.C. to the Governor of Fiji, Sir Cecil Rod well. Mr K. H. Wyles has been elected president of the Canterbury Employers' Association, and Messrs W. Co>s and .1. A. Black have been appointed vicepresidents. The death occurred yesterday of Mr W. R. Cooke, who came to Christchurch in the sixties and established the pharmaceutical business of W. It. Cooke and Son. In High Street, from which he retired about II years ago. Cabled advice has been received to the effect that I)r John Crawshaw has been awarded the degree of M.D. of the Victoria I'nivorsity of Manchester, Kngland, for thesis observations on cerebrospinal fever at Featherston Military Camp, Mr J. C. Forsyth, of Auckland, was last night appointed Assistant Electrical Engineer to the Christchurch Citv Council. Mr Forsyth holds the B.Sc. degree in engineering of Glasgow I'nivorsity. and served in the War as an officer of the Royal Artillery. There were 22 applicants for the position. ' Mr F. Evans, who has been Registrar of Births, Heaths and Marriages in Christchurch for some eight years, has been transferred to Auckland, where he will hold a similar position. The Auckland registration district is the largest in New Zealand. Mr Evans has been Registrar of Electors for Christchurch North for several years, ami will take the duties of registrar for Auckland Last. He will also be passport officer in Auckland.

The position of Sergeant at-Arms of the House of Representatives, rendered vacant by the death of Commander C. G. Home, has been tilted by the appointment, of Major H. H. Browne, late N.Z.S.C. (telegraphs The Son's Parliamentary reporter). This officer's last position was Area Officer at Paeroa. He has to his credit 4t years' service in various. countries, and his last experience of actual warfare was in South Africa, with the 7th New Zealand Contingent. Major Browne volunteered for service in the Great War, but his age kept him in the Dominion. Tie was awarded the 0.8. E. for his work as an instructor on the home establishment.

The death of Mr John Kemp, on July 20, at Waihi, aged 77 years, removes the last member of that generation of Auckland's oldest pioneer family. His father, Mr Thomas B. Kemp, landed in Auckland in 1842, when Queen Street was a (lax and raupo swamp, with the hillsides decked with tents and whares. Mr Thomas Kemp is said to have ploughed at Tamaki the first furrow ever turned in Auckland district. Mr .1. Kemp was born at the Tamaki, and removed with his parents to Mt. Albert in the year 1851. At the early age of 17 years he joined the Mounted Defence Force, and was actively engaged in that forced uring the Maori War. Afterwards he took up business as a building | contractor.
