PRIZE DISTRIBUTIONS.

DIGBY'S COMMERCIAL SCHOOL.

The annual "breaking up" and prizegiving in connection with Digby's Commercial School took place at the Tc Whare Hall on Friday evening. The prizes were presented by Miss Digby in the absence of the Mayor, who apologised for his absence. The annual report stated that 27 of the school pupils were successful in passing the Government entrance examinations for shorthand-typistes, and at the 1918 May examination secured the iirst three places on the Order of Merit list, while eight of the nine junior candidates who entered for the last February examination were successful. Special mention should be made of the performance of Miss Doris Frost who had been awarded a special prize in the senior division. Two hundred and fifty-nine shorthand speed and theory certificates had been granted to pupils by Sir Isaac Pitman & Sons, and the results of the last two examinations had not as yet been received. The gold medals annually presented by the Christchurch Shorthand Writers' Association for high speed writing had been again awarded to two of the school students, the winners on this occasion being Miss Dorothy Marker and Miss Viola Rossiter who gained certificates for 170 and 150 words per minute respectively. Theory and speed classes have also been held for Gregg shorthand, and seven speed certificates have been awarded to Gregg students by the Christchurch Shorthand Writers' Association.
