ASHBURTON.

NEWS AND NOTES. From Our Own CorrtsvonSent. There was only a small attendance at the Theatre Koyal last evening when Mr E. U. Just, of the New Zealand Moderate League, delivered an address on State purchase and control of the liquor traffic. His Worship the Mayor (Mr E. Galbraith) presided. The speaker briefly outlined the policy of the league, which was not in favour of Continuance, nor yet Nolicense, but appealed for the retention of the rights of the citizen. Referring to the last ballot, Mr Just said that, in getting the vote of the soldier, they had secured the vote of the manhood of New Zealand. The Moderate League represented the bulk of the electors, who had a perfect right to have their wishes considered. At the conclusion the speaker was accorded a vote of

thanks. Mr A. M. Paterson (Government Veterinary Surgeon) recently delivered an address to the Lowcliffe branch of the Farmers' Union, the subject being, "Diseases Now Prevalent in Stock.'' Mr Paterson dealt with some diseases in cattle and sheep, and showed how diseases might largely be prevented, especially milk fever, among cows. He stated that the mortality had been reduced 90 per cent, by the latest methods used for combating this complaint. The subject of paralysis in cows was also fully dealt with. Various diseases in sheep were described, and the remedies to be used given. At the close of the address the speaker answered a number of important questions put to him by several farmers present. He also gave much useful information and advice. At a meeting held in Mayfield it was unanimously decided to form a cricket club. The following officers were elected:—Captain, E. C. Withell: vice-captain, L. Frost; secretary and treasurer, D. 0. Sewell; committee, D. Duff, F. Timms, H. Patterson, W. Edis, J. Bennett, and the Rev. Johnston; custodian, L. Frost.
