Their Excellencies the GovernorGeneral and the Countess of Liverpool will arrive in Christchurch to-morrow morning. The Hon. Sir James Allen (Minister of Defence) arrived in Christchurch from Wellington this morning and went on to Dunedin by the midday express. Passengers from Wellington by this morning's ferry steamer included the Hon. Sir Francis Bell (Minister of Education and Leader of the Legislative Council), the Hon. W. Nosworthy (Minister of Agriculture), the Hon. J. A. Hanan, M.P. for Invercargill, and Mr T. E. Y. Seddon, M.P. for Westland. The Rt. Hon. Sir Joseph Ward will arrive in Christchurch from Wellington to-morrow.

The congregation oi' St. David's Presbyterian Church, Auckland, has given a practically unanimous call to the Rev. David Herron, M.A., says a Press Association message.

A London cable message states that Dr T. A. H. Valintine, Inspector-General of New Zealand Hospitals, is visiting the hospitals in Great Britain, and will report to his Government on the most recent developments. Mr I. Stevenson has resigned from his position of draughtsman in the office of the architect to the Canterbury Education Board. He is going to Oamaru. The board at its meeting this morning accepted Mr Stevenson's resignation with regret. Nurse Maude became suddenly ill yesterday morning. She was removed to Nurse Turner's private hospital, "The Limes," where she was operated on for appendicitis. This morning Nurse Maude was reported to be progressing as well as could be expected. A motion of sympathy with the relatives of the late Mr H. Mclntyre, headmaster of the Washdyke School, who had a record of 40 years' service as a teacher, 27 of which were spent in Canterbury, was passed as the meeting of the Canterbury Education Board this moaning. Mr Duncan F. Bauchop, 8.E., A.M. Inst. C.E., A.M.I. Mech. E., New Zealand manager for Leyland Motors, Ltd., which has recently opened a branch in Wellington, arrived in Christchurch today, in connection with the Olympia Motor Exhibition. He is staying with Mr H. J. Raphael. A Wellington Press Association telegram states that the Government Statistician (Mr Malcolm Fraser) is to represent the Dominion at the Imperial Conference of Statisticians, to-be held in London next January. Mr J. W.Butcher, chief compiler in the Census and Statistics Office, will act as Government Statistician during Mr Fraser's absence. The death of Mr J, Weir, who for many years was a member and chairman of the Heathcote Valley School Committee, was referred to at the meeting of the Canterbury Education Board this morning. Several members spoke in eulogistic terms of the sterling character of the late, Mr Weir, and a motion of sympathy with the relatives was carried in silence, members standing. At the meeting of the Canterbury Education Board this morning the following were appointed as organising teachers for various centres: —-Mr S. J. Irwin (Ashburton centre), Mr F. Piper (Geraldine centre), Mr N. Pavitt (Greymouth centre), Mr T. A. Morland (Hokitika centre). It was agreed to make the appointments date from the reopening of the schools after the midsummer vacation.

Mr W. Drake, •who has been stationed at the Timaru Telegraph Office for the past 22 years, left there yesterday to take up the position of postmaster of Sumner. During his long residence in Timaru, Mr Drake took a keen interest in all matters pertaining to the welfare of the office and staff, and for the last seven years he had been secretary of the local Post and Telegraph Officers' Association.. He also took a keen interest in football, and for five years sat on the Rugby Union, holding the office of president for two years. On Wednesday evening he was presented by the Post and Telegraph staffs with •several pieces of plate. He was recently presented by the Star Football Club, of which he was formerly secretary, and for many years a vice-presi-dent, with a silver-mounted ebony walking stick and a pair of reindeer gloves.
