THE PUBLIC LIBRARY.

The librarian of the Canterbury Publie Library reports excellent progress in all departments during October. Eightytwo new members were enrolled, and, in addition to these, 67 returned soldiers took out free yearly tickets. ■flie volumes issued from the lending library numbered 14,122, compared with 11,406 that were taken out in October of last year. Nearly 200 new volumes were added to this department. In the reference library 4208 works were consulted, this being nearly '2OOO more than the total for October, 1918. It is interesting to record that quite 2000 -references were made to the volumes in the Commercial and Technical section. A donation of 10 guineas was received from the Canterbury Chamber of Commerce, and one of £lO from the Canterbury Philosophical Institute towards the upkeep of this important section, which is extensively used by the general public. In the juvenile library 2100 volumes were issued for home reading, this being 200 more than the total for October last i year. In this department 48 new books were placed on the shelves. Two most interesting prints have been presented to the New Zealand collection at the library by Mr L. A. Stringer. One illustrates part of the Royal marriage festivities at Christchurch to commemorate the marriage of HJt.H. of Wales on July 9, 1863, and the other one illustrates the volunteer encampment and inspection at Christchurch on April 15, 1865.
