THE HOUSING PROBLEM.

CITY COUNCIL'S SCHEME. As the first step in carrying out the Christchureh City Council's scheme for building 200, houses, to ease the housing problem in the city, the Sites Sub-com-mittee of the council's Housing Committee has decided to recommend that a block of close on six acres .of land-j----through which a road will have to be put —in Worcester Street, North Linwood, should be acquired. An option ever the Tand has be«n obtained, and the City Council will inspect on Friday afternoon. It is estimated that about 35- houses could be erected on the block. Talking of housing matters to a Sun representative yesterday, Dr H. T. J. Thacker, M.P. (Mayor of Christchureh) said it appeared that a statement made by Sir James Allen (Minister of Finance) that city and borough councils were limited to borrowing only £IO,OOO, at 4i per cent., in any one year, from the Advances Department, had been misinterpreted as referring to the money available for housing. Dr Thacker said he had asked a question on the subject, and had been informed that the £IO,OOO referred to has no connection with money tor housing. Dr Thacker also remarked that the latest idea in Australia in connection with housing is for married returned soldiers to be provided with houses which contain just the necessary rooms —kitchen, scullery, bathroom, bedroom and living-room, with a shelter verandah —extra rooms to be added later, as they become necessary. !
