Henry Terry, who was fined £2 for non-attendance as a common juror at the Supreme Court on Monday, had his fine remitted by his Honour Mr Justice Herdman this morning. The excuse for non-attendance was that Terry lived at Lincoln. Applications will be received till 4 p.m. on November 21. An instruction has been issued by General Headquarters of the Defence Department, that, when temporarily-em-ployed staffs are being reduced, single men who have not seen service overseas are to be dispensed with before married men or men who have had service overseas with the Expeditionary Force, unless there are very strong reasons to the contrary. Christchureh people who wish to erect tents in their gardens, to assist them in providing accommodation for visitors in Carnival Week, should not overlook the fact that there is a city bylaw with regard to Written permission from the City Council is necessary before tents may be erected, and the council may limit the period for which they are to be put up. Apparently a regard for hygiene, sanitation, and reduction of fire" risks is responsible for the existence of the by-law. •, In connection with Christ's College Grammar School, three entrance scholarships of the value of £24 per annum, and tenable for three years, will be offered for competition in December, open to boys under 13 years of age on the first day of that month. These scholarships will be open without restriction as to religious denomination or previous schools attended. An instruction /which has just been issued by General Headquarters of the Defence Department will be very pleasing to all the servants of the department. The offices are to remain open, but those members of the staffs required to work in that period will be granted equivalent leave, from the New Year adjournment to January 8 (inclusive).
