Dr and Mrs Davenport returned to Coalgate yesterday afternoon. Miss Barlow, of Tai Tapu, leaves by the Manuka for Wellington to-night. Dr and Mrs Trotter and Miss Trotter (Dunedin) are staying at the Clarendon. Lady and Miss Clifford arrived from ■Wellington by the Manuka this Morning. Mr and Mrs L. Griffiths and Mrs Bennett (Blenheim) have eome to Christchureh for the races. • Mrs E. Bqntley Davison and her mother, Mrs Thomas, returned to Culverden to-day after a visit to town. ~ Mr and Mrs Harold Brown (Wellington) and Mr and Mrs G. Wallace Bews (Auckland) are amongst the guests at Warner's. Mrs 11. M. Campbell and Mrs Moore leave to-night on their return to Hawke's Bay, after a visit to Dunedin mil Christchureh. Miss Lucy Cowan leaves for Wellington this evening, in order to be present at the competitions, in which a number •t her pupils are taking part. The engagement is announced of Miss Iris M. Jackson, only daughter of Mrs m.d the late Mr A. G. Jackson, of this city, to Mr William E. Davie, only son «f Mr and Mrs W. A. Davie, of Aldington. The Christchureh division of the St. John Ambulance Brigade held its fortnightly meeting last evening, Miss Mills presiding. Dr Widdowson gave an instructive address on children's ailments, their symptoms and treatment, nnd was accorded a hearty vote of thanks. Miss N. Wright, who won the ladies' i golf championship in Auckland recently, was given i warm welcome on her return to Timaru. The local golf club gave an afternoon in her honour, and presented her with a set of silverbacked brushes, and opera glasses, as a memento of the occasion. Amongst the dance fixtures to be held during the next week is the Assembly 'Ball 'on the 13th, and a number of private dances, including one to be given by Mr and Mrs Eandall Macdonald on the Bth, and by Captain and the Bon. Mrs Tahu Rhodes on the lltli. Mr and Mrs A. McKellar are also entertaining a number of friends at a dance evening on the same date. The monthly committee meeting of the Phillipstown Kindergarten was held on Monday, in the school. Mrs Voss presided, and there were also present:—Mesdames Williams, Voss, Glen, Lye, Burn, McKenzie, Miss Bradbury, and secretary. The headmistress (Miss Gorrie) reported the roll number as 59, highest attendance 54, lowest 25, average 50. Mrs Williams reported collecting subscriptions for, and purchasing a, tea urn, a teapot and dipper for the school. A hearty vote «& thanks was given Mrs Williams for this splendid work in obtaining these goods. The treasurer reported • that school subscriptions amounted to £2 13/4 this month. Quite a new point of view was brought to light by the dance given at Leeston last evening. It was promoted by a committee of returned soldierß, tendered by them to the women war-workers of the district, 'who, they declared, had toiled and sacrificed equally with the men in the trenches. They intend to make the ball an annual affair, in remembrance of the part played by the women of the district in the War. Miss Macdonald supplied the music for the dtmcing, and, although the rain eame down in torrents during the evening, there was a good attendance, and a thoroughly happy time was spent. The committee of management included the Messrs G. Taylor and H. D. Jones (who divided MC. duties), J. Coe, J. Boyd, E. W. Donald, J. McEinnie, R. T. Buchanan, J. Butler, W. O'Neil, J. O'Neil, M. Brown and N. S. Lunn. A very successful concert was given In the Trinity Hall, Manchester Street, last evening, by the prize-winners of the recent Band of Hope contest. It was in aid of the Peace Fund, and there was a fairly good attendance, which would undoubtedly have been larger but for the bad weather. The programme included a pianoforte duet by the Misses Myra and Vera Pollard, action song ("Rabbit Pie") by seven little girls, recitations by 'Miss Hazel Shier, Miss" Kathleen Chappie, Mr J. Colin Craig and Master Philip Munn. Character songs were given by Miss - Gwen Sinclair, Master lan Sinclair, and Miss Hazel- Shier; action eongs by the Sydenham Band of Hope m . and Knox Band of Hope; a Highland Fling by Miss Girly Black; decorated, hoop drill and scarf drill by girls from the Knox Band of Jlope; songs by Master Eric Milne and Miss Gwen Ryder. Accompaniments were played by "Misses N. Sinclair, Pollard, and Mrs Hargreaves. The concert was most appreciatively received, and Mr Lucas ■was accorded a hearty vote of thanks for arranging the entertainment.
