LAWN TENNIS.

INTERCLUB COMPETITION. The A Grade matches of the Canterbury Tawn Tennis Association’s intcrclub competition were commenced on Saturday. The competitions will last until about the middle of January. Seven teams have entered. On Saturday Opawa B had a bye. The following arc the results of the matches:— CANTERBURY COLLEGE V. SOUTH CHRISTCHURCH. This match was played on the Sydenham courts, and resulted as follows (College names arc given first): — Singles—J. H. E. Schroder v. L. .T. Berry 9, W. R. Lascellcs v. P. J. Berry 9, A. I). Tench v. Colville 2, A. D. Monro v. Paul 5. Doubles—Schroder and Tench 9 v. L. J. Berry and P. J. Berry 8, Lascellcs and Monro 9 v. Colville and Paul 3. Totals—Canterbury College 49, South Christchurch 30. ST. ALBANS v. ADDINGTON. St. Albans players are mentioned first in each case: — Singles—Dawson 9 v. Mannings fi, AckToyd 9 v. Derhidgc (>, Findlay 7 v. Fairclough 9, Whitehead 9 v. Potter 2. NEW BRIGHTON CLUB. The New Brighton Lawn Tennis Club opened its season on Saturday In the presence of a large attendance of members and friends. Mr Gilbert Jackson (vice-president) staled that all would regret the absence, through illness, of Mr B. C. Bishop, who had been president of the club since its inception, 25 years ago. The olllcial opening of the season was hardly complete without his presence. He was happy to state, however, that Mr Bishop was now well on the road to recovery. Mr Jackson extended a hearty welcome to visitors and to members returned from active service. After congratulating members upon the condition of the courts and the general appearance of the grounds, he presented the championship cup to R. Browning. Mr Jackson then declared the season open. Afternoon tea was served by the lady members of the club, and play was in full swing during the afternoon.
