Offlcal notification has been received that the transport' Ellenga, which is bringing back New Zealand troops from Egypt, is now to arrive at Auckland on September 10. The flying at Soekburn continued after lunch yesterday, when Colonel A. V.Bettington, C.M.G., R.A.F., Air Force Adviser to the New Zealand Government, made a short flight with, a mechanic, and, on descending, took as a passenger Mrs H. F. Wigram. The Colonel set his course in the direction of Shirley, reaching a height of about 7000 ft. Before returning to the aerodrome the 'plane flew over the sea north of New Brighton, voyaging over Cathedral Square and up towards Cashmere Hills on the return trip. A third flight was made with the machine, when Major A. de Bathe Brandon, D.5.0., M.C., piloted the 'plane, with Mb J. C. Mercer, pilot to the Aviation Company, as passenger. Members of the City Fire Brigade held their annual social and dance at the fire station, Lichfield Street, last night. There was a large attendance of members of the brigade and their friends. Amongst those present were: — Messrs H. P. Hopkins (chairman of the Fire Board), H. Holland and F. Bureroyne (members of the board), C. J. Treleaven (secretary to the board), J. Steer (chairman of the Greymoutlr Fire Board). J. J. Dougall and Superintendent Bambery (Railway Brigade), Superintendent Hean (Addington Workshops Brigade), Superintendent Carson (Lyttelton Fire Brigade), and Superintendent J. Carter (Sumner . Fire Brigade). During the evening the following members of the brigade were presented with service medals and bars: Fireman T. McCormack, five years' service medal, two years' service bar, total service eight years; Fireman O. J. Perry, five years' service medal, two years' service bar, total service eight years; Fireman H. Henry, two years' service bar, total service 10 years; Superintendent C. C. Warner, two years' service bar, total service 17 years. The dancing was held in the social room upstairs. Motor Mechanic Kirk and Fireman acted' as M.C.'s, and Wells's Orchestra supplied the music. Supper was served in the engine-room. The youth; Claude Thompson, who was sentenced by his Honour Mr Justice Herdman yesterday morning to two years' reformative treatment on a charge of arson, and was convicted and ordered to come up for sentence when called upon on various charges of theft, breaking,.entering and theft, and signing a money-order without authority, came up for sentence before Mr T. A. B. Bailey, S.M., at the Magistrate's Court in the afternoon on two charges of theft. The charges were that, between June 1 and July 31, he. stole, at Christchurch, various articles of a total value of £7 10/-, the property of H. F. Stevens, and that he broke and entered the premises of Brown Bros, and stole goods valued at £2: The Magistrate said that in view of the sentence of two years' reformative treatment he would convict the accused and order him to come up for sentence when called upon on both charges.
