NATIONAL COUNCIL OF WOMEN.
At the monthly meeting of the. Chriatchurch Branch of the National Council of Women, Miss Henderson, 8.A., presided. The secretary reported that promises of support of a Bill making women eligible for seats in Parliament were received from Messrs Nosworthy and McCombs ami Dr Thacker. It was decided to approach the members of the Legislative Council regarding this matter.
The following remits from the Auckland council were received »hd endorsed:—From the Auckland Mothers'Union: "That this branch urge the National Council to represent to the Government the urgent need for the establishing. of a home or institution for the detention of young female workers." From the Auckland Tailoresses' Union of Industrial Workers:
'' That, in order to protect the interests of women workers in shops and factories—for the better administration of those laws existing for tho protection of women and girls' labour —it is emperative that women inspectors should be immediately appointed, with adequate powers of judgment, -with male inspectors, as to the necessity for prosecution in cases of serious and wilful disregard of the law.'' After some discussion regarding the employment of girls by banks, the following resolution was passed:—"That, seeing that some thousands of girls will be forced to earn their own living who might otherwise .have married those who had given their livc3 in tho war, no restrictions should be placed upon the girls regarding the manner of earning such living."
