AT THE COLOSSEUM.

THE SAILORS ENTERTAINED. The ladies’ section of the NavyLeague entertained the petty officers and men of H.M.S. New Zealand at the Colosseum last evening, when close on 200 sailors were present at a splendidlyserved high tea. The tables, which were decorated with spring flowers, were attended by a bevy of ladies, under the supervision of Mesdames Treleaven, Wyles and Wilson. For the concert portion of the programme, one half of the Colosseum was curtained off, and a small stage erected, from which Mr J. J. Dougall welcomed the men. The concert was opened by Master - James Grieve, who sang “ Killiekrankie, ” assisted by a party of juveniles. Miss Penny Marshall, a diminutive ballerina, was loudly applauded for two pretty dances. Miss G. Vincent played “Grand Bolero de Concert, ’ ’ for the violin, with taste. A banjo band, under the leadership of Mr Louis W. Bloy, rendered ragtime medleys; the Christchurch Male Voice Choir, under the baton of Dr Bradshaw, contributed “The Song of the Bow” and “O Sanctissima.” Pupils of Miss Macdonald’s dancing school, in Irish costume, footed an Irish jig merrily. This was followed by a dance by Miss Wynn Williams. Mr Malcolm recited “The Colonel”; Mr A. L. Cropp sang “The Boatswain’s Lament,” and* as an encore, “The Company SergeantMajor”; the Male Voice Choir appeared again and sang “The Soldiers’ Chorus” from “Faust,” and “Franklynn’s Doggo”; Chief-Stoker Daly sang successfully “In These Hard Times” and “K-K-Katie.” The programme concluded with an exhibition of legerdemain by Mr Leslie Cookson. Immediately after the conclusion of the concert, the Lyric Orchestra, under the baton of Mr Robert Kirk, struck up the dance music, and for two hours the visitors revelled in the maze of the dance. Supper was served at 9.80 pan. in the marquee.
