THE SOCIAL ROUND.

Mr Wilfred Hall and Miss Emma Hall (Glenroy) are in town. Mrs W. Macfarlane and Miss Macfarlane (Kaiwara) are in town. Mr and Mrs W. K. Macdonald, the Misses M. and A. Macdonald (Timarn) »re staying at Warner's. Mr and Mrs J. W. Wallace and Mr and Mrs L. D. C. Nairn (Wellington) are staying; at the Clarendon. Sister Edna Pengelly, N.Z.A.N.S., came down from Wellington during the ■week, on her way to Hanmer, where she will take up the duties of matron at the military sanatorium. The engagement is announced of Miss Pearl McKay, second daughter of Mr G. M. McKay, of Blenheim, to Captain A. G. Bryan, N.Z.E.F., second son of Mr G. F. Bryan, of Westport. Lieut.-Engineer D. Bauchop, R.N., Mrs Banehop and their little son, who arrived from England by the Athenic, are at present the guests of Mr and Mrs H. J. Raphael, Gloucester Street. A dance, organised by a committee of gentlemen in return for one recently arranged by the ladies, was held in the Lyttelton Club hall last evening. A good deal of work had been bestowed on the decorations, and the hall presented a very pleasing appearance.' About 75 couples were present, including the Mayor of Lyttelton (Mr W. T. Lester) and Mrs Lester. The music ■was supplied by Miss Crocker (piano) and several other instrumentalists. A large gathering of parents and pupils, past and present, assembled in the Lincoln District High School to bid farewell to Miss M. E. Osborn, 8.A., ■who has been transferred to the Train-

ing College, Christchurch. Mr K. E. Alexander, Director of Lincoln College, and, in a eulogistic speech, referred to the excellent work invariably done by Miss Osborn in the school. Miss Pearson then presented Miss Osborn with a travelling ca3e and toilet ■ requisites, accompanied by a beautiful bouquet expressive of the love of her pupils. Mr and Mrs Bobert Latter (Barry's Bay) motored to Kaikoura during the ■week, to be present at the wedding of Miss Moana Gale, second daughter of Mrs Gale' (Kaikoura) and Mr E. Latter, of Cloudy Bange, son of Mr B, Latter. The wedding took place in St."Peter's Church, Kaikoura, the Bev. C. P. Saunders officiating, the bride being fiven away by her grandfather, Mr G. Istcourt Parsons. She was gowned in white satin, with a court train of brocade, wreath and veil, and carried a white shower bouquet. Miss Winifred Gale was bridesmaid, and Mr P. Cook best man, After the ceremony a large number of friends were entertained at a reception at Kincaid Downs, the residence of the bride's mother. Melbourne men who complain of the «ost of fitting out their wives for a Melbourne Cup meeting will feel ashamed of their parsimony when they compare the cost of dressing a wife for the Melbourne Cup with that of dressing her for Ascot (writes the London correspondent of Melbourne "Age"). The expense of Ascot, which is'always high, has been increased this year by the reign of high prices in the shops, and by the fact that Boyalty announced its intention of attending the four days of the meeting instead of two, which was the maximum in the past years. There is no limit in what a society woman, can spend in dressing for Ascot Week, with its riot of entertainments, in addition to the racing, but the following prices represent a moderate estimate of the rost of dressing a wife for the four days of the racing:—Four frocks, at £4O to £7O each; wrap, £4O; parasol, £ls to £2O; four hats, £2O to £3O each; pair of suede shoes, £5; four pair gloves, 20/- to 30/- each. No wife who has any respect for her husband's position —and all wives are more keen on keeping up their husband's position than husbands themselves are—could dress for this year's Ascot meeting much under £4OO.
