MAGISTRATE'S COURT.

TO-DAY'S CASES. Messrs F. H. Christian and W. H. Norton, J.P.'s, presided at the Magistrate's Court to-day. By-law Henry Hart was fined 5/- and costs for riding his bicycle by night without lights, and 10/- and costs for giving a false name and address to a uniformed constable. Robert Henry May (Mr C. S. Thomas) pleaded not guilty to a # charge of driving a horse and trap in a negligent manner. The charge arose out of the fact that defendant knocked down a boy who was riding a bicycle at the corner of Colombo and Tuam Streets. After hearing lengthy evidence, the Bf-nch decided to convict accused and fine him 10/- and costs. The Bench also directed that defendant should pay for the cost of repairing the bicycle. William Thiele was fined 20/- and costs for riding an unregistered motor cycle, and 10/- and costs for speeding over a street intersection. ' George Yateman and Joseph Hendry were both charged with plying for hire with nnlcensed motor vehicles, and also with plying for hire without a license. Yateman was fined 10/- and costs on each charge, and Hendry was fined 40/- and costs on the first charge and 20/- and costs on the second.

RAKAIA. Mr T. A. B. Bailey, S.M., presided over a sitting of the Magistrate's Court at Rakaia yesterday. Anti-Shouting Breaches.—Peter Gallipan, licensee of the South Bakaia Hotel, was charged on two informations of allowing "shouting" on his premises on June 1 last. Evidence was given by AV. K. Cranston. Mr Cassidyf* who appeared for the licensee, argued that the "shouting" had been done by boarders in a room other than the bar.'" Constable MeLcnnan stated that the room in which the drinks were served was adjoining the bar, from which drinks could be served through a slide. The room was used almost exclusively for the serving of liquor. The Magistrate held that the police had proved a technical offence, and the licensee was fined 20/-"on each charge, with 18/coats. W. B .Cranston (Edendale) pleaded guilty to two breaches of the antish outing regulations. The Sergeant asked his Worship to take into consideration the expense Cranston had been put to in attending the case. Cranston was convicted and discharged in each, case. B. Topping (Bakaia), for two breaches of the same regulations, was also .convicted and discharged.
