TRANSHIPMENTS.

DELAYS FROM WELLINGTON. EFFECT ON FRUIT CABGOES. Evidence of the manner in wßich Canterbury is served in the transhipment of goads from Wellington is afforded in the case of the Tofua which with a cargo of various fruits arrived in Wellington on Saturday. Included in the shipment were Cook Island oranges, a great proportion of which arrived here in bad condition. There is still a considerable quantity yet to come to hand, and the final consignment is not expected here until Monday next. In addition, other classes of fruit including Island tomatoes. and bananas and American lemons from this vessel have not all yet been received. In the case of the oranges the position is extremely serious. It is admitted that one cause of the delay was perhaps unavoidable, for owing to the late arrival of s.s. Maori on Tuesday, that vessel had to proceed back to Wellington without being able to unload the portion of this shipment which she carried. One feature of 'the Island fruit shipment is that a quantity has already been condemned on arrival here owing to the presence of the fruit fly. In Wellington it is understood, almost half of one merchant 's consignment was condemned from this cause.
