RUGBY FOOTBALL.

THE CANTERBURY TEAM. It was understood, after last Tuesday 's meeting of the Management Committee of the Canterbury Rugby Union, that the selectors of the Canterbury representative teams would make an early Selection of the team which is to meet Wellington's representatives in Christchurch on September 13, and would give the team a "breather" against H<M.S. New Zealand's team next week. However, the selectors have shown their indifference to criticism and suggestion by continuing to make experiments with- the team : —instead of selecting a fifteen early and giving:it some training and coaching—and by intimating that the team to play Wellington will be chosen" after the match with H.M.S. New Zealand's team. As it is probable that the latter match will be played next Thursday, instead of on Wednesday (as arranged originally) the team to meet Wellington is not likely to be announced until the day before the Wellington-Canterbury game!-

Th«, team selected to play against H.M.S. New Zealand's fifteen is as follows: Full-back: E. Brosuahon (Marists).

Three-quarters: J. C. Mullins (Marists), H. Davis (Linwood), R. A. Grant (Merivale).

Five-eighths: A. Thompson (Old Boys), D. McCormick (Marists). Hall-back: E. Fitzgerald (Marists). Wing-forward: N. Carnegie (Merivale). Forwards: L. Peterson (Marists), E. Sime (Old Bovs), E. Cummings (Linwood), F. Sparks (Linwood), C. R. Murray (Christchurch), W. Shaw (Linwood), H. Sparrow (Old Boys). ' , Emergencies: Backs, W. P. Guiney (Christchurch), A. McLcod (Christchurch), G. Burson (Linwood); forwards, W. F. Owen (Linwood). J. Ellis (Marists), J. B. Jackson (University).

It is a striking commentary on the selection of the team that J. Ellis, who has been selected to represent the South Island against the North, is again left out of the Canterbury team. A. Thompson, who was tried once before as a.fiveeighths in the Canterbury team, but was not successful in that position, and who was afterwards played by his club at centre three-quarter—a position to which he is much better suited —is tried again as five-eighths, and Davis is retained at centre.

The team is to meet at the Training Hall at 7.30 p.m. on Monday, for practice. (
