Roberts said Australian importers handled their own meats, except what the Army required. None was handled by American or other companies. Only 10 per cent, of Great Britain's consumption of imported meat in 1918 consisted of Australasian. The serious shortage then prevailing necessitated large imports of North American, the price of which was higher. A REPORT DENIED. Australian and N.Z. Cable Association. (fee. May 20, 11.5) LONDON, May 12. The Food Ministry denies the report that it has purchased the Canadian cheese output. VALUE OF THE RUPEE. (Rec. May 20, 8.45) SYDNEY, May 20. Advices received from Calcutta report a rise of 2 l-32d in the rupee rate of exchange, due to the increased price of silver. This will make the rupee worth 1/BJ. PRICE OP HIDES. (Rec. May 20, 8.45) SYDNEY, May 20. At the first free sales of hides allowed for two years the price paid at auction for sound sorts showed an advance of 2d to 5d per lb above the previously fixed rates. Cut and faulty sorts show an advance of Id to 3d.
