j The '' Jazz. Band,'' which has taken London, New York and Paris by storm, has materialised in Christchurch, or perhaps it is more correct to say is materialising—and will make its .first appearance at the Diploma Ball in the Art Gallery -■on June 17. The collection of instruments comprised in the "jazz" makes for startlingly original effects, and is peculiarly appropriate to many of the new dances—indeed the student of evolution can plainly see how the one has called into being the other! The promoters of the band include a number of enthusiasts who have tasted the dcJights of the "jazz" abroad, and who feel that Christchurch would be lagging hopelessly in the march of progress unless one were formed here. The Diploma Ball, which is in connection with the Canterbury College presentation of diplomas, will be anticipated with added .Interest on its account.
