DEPUTATION TO MINISTER. P«#* Association. DUNEDIX, May 3. . A deputation from the Returned Soldiers' Association submitted the men's grievances to Sir James Allen (Minister of Defence) to-day, and asked that financial assistance be made' retrospective.

The Minister announced that the matters had been dealt with, and it had been decided to • accept retrospective applications from men, whether before or after discharge, who were serving abroad when the regulations granting financial assistance were gazetted in January, 1917, and who, on return, found accumulated liabilities. . The deputation urged the propriety of giving appointments on the Defence Department staff, or otherwise, to men •who had seen active service. The Minister said the object of repatriation was to place men back in permanent • employment. This object would not be assisted by giving them military appointments which would be only temporary .- -. - . -
