A CUNNING MURDERER.

The police intercepted a letter addressed to Landru (who is awaiting trial on, charges of murdering women) from Mile Deschamps, whom Landru met in a tube half an hour before he was arrested. Otherwise she undoubtedly would have been another of his victims. Deschamps, a pretty girl of 20 years, with beautiful eyes, told the police that she immediately felt that she could not trust the "handsome black-bearded gentleman." He was an extraordinary gentleman, with extraordinarily fascinating eyes, amiable manners, and a sweet voice. He offered her his seat, and she could not resist when asked to alight at the next station. Landru added that he would give all his life for a minute's talk with her alone. They walked together in the underground corridors for a quarter of an hour. Landru professed love, and told her he had a large fortune. He said:— "Next week you will come in a motor car to my lovely villa in the i country."
