HORSE v. TRACTOR.
To the Editor of THE SDN. Sir, —Your correspondent, Mr J. Heir, has evidently assumed the area or an “acre’’ as mentioned in the extract from the ‘‘Autocar” quoted by him descriptive of tractor ploughing in Cheshire, to be one of 4840 square yards; i.e., a statute acre. As a native of South West Lancashire I can state from practical, and also responsible experience, that in that district, as well as in Cheshire and some other neighbouring counties, an acre has always been understood and recognised as of the customary Cheshire measure, 10,240 square yards. That was so at the time of my leaving England, and, so far as I am aware, holds good to-day. Some years ago, in pursuance of an order of the British Court of Chancery, I was engaged on the valuation of a very extensive and valuable mineral estate,- the surveys and calculations taking some months to carry out. These were all based on the Cheshire acre of 10,240 square yards. 1 mention this merely as another illustration of what is generally understood and accepted in that part of Great Britain. —I am, etc., J. HAYES. 78 Andover Street, Christchurch, April 29.
