The death of the Dowager Lady Southampton removes yet another link with the Court of Queen Victoria, who during the latter years of her life depended much on her ladies-in-waiting, and was on terms of close friendship with a number of them, including the Dowager Duchess of Roxburghe, Lady Ely, the Dowager Lady Erroll, ami the Dowager Lady Southampton. All these have now followed her Majesty into the "Silent Land," Lady Southampton, the last of them, having passed away at

Park Place, Englefield Green, on August 18. Park Place is a charming estate belonging to Lord Southampton, who lent it to his mother for her life. Besides two sons, Lord Southampton and Captain Edward Fitzßoy, the deceased lady leaves three daughters, Lady Charles FitzEoy, Mrs Percy Crutchley (formerly a maid of honour to Queen Victoria), and Lady Penryhn, besides numerous grandchildren. Some 60 helpers gave their services in connection with the Bealey Avenue Hostel for children during the epidemic, not working continuously, of course, but giving their services as required. Ithas been a hard-working but happy time for all the assistants, who have thoroughly enjoyed "mothering" the temporarily motherless, and giving them a really good time. Mrs T. E. Taylor has supervised with kindliness, tact, and capability. Miss Hull, so well and favourably known in connection with the free kindergartens, has been an ideal matron, and the helpers "just splendid," to quote Mrs Taylor's words. To-morrow, on the eve of closing the hostel, the staff will meet by way of a little social gathering, before resuming the even tenor of non-epidemic times.
