ACTION TAKEN IN AUCKLAND. Press Association. AUCKLAND, November 29. Revelations brought about by the epidemic, particularly in regard to the existence of slum areas and the prevalence of grossly insanitary conditions in certain quarters of the city, were discussed by the. City Council last evening. Reports were presented by the Mayor, the City Engineer, the Chief Sanitary Inspector, and the City Solicitor. As the result of a recommendation by the Mayor, the council, at its next meeting, will consider a proposal to embark on a progressive housing policy, for which purpose a loan of £25,000 is proposed, to increase the number of sanitary inspectors, and to obtain wider powers under the Public. Health Act. \ INVESTIGATION WANTED. CONDITION IN THE CITY. The committee set up at Monday evening's meeting of the chairmen and vice-chairmen of the block committees, to consider the advisability of continuing the organisation met yesterday afternoon at the City Council Chambers, the Mayor of Christchurch presiding. The following resolutions were agreed to: "The committee believe — "(1) That the facts revealed during the epidemic concerning congestion, insanitation, overcrowding, poverty, ignorance of the elementary laws of health, and neglect of children demand early and searching investigation into (a)' causes of the conditions and (b) rotation of responsibility." "(2) We urge all Block Committees to supply to this committee facts relevant to the above questions and any recommendations thereon.' " (;>) This committee will later submit the full report for the consideration of a committee of chairmen of all the blocks." "(4) We request that in the meantime the Block Committees continue observation and keep accurate registration of the names, addresses, and forms of health rendered by all the volunteers pending further developments." It was decided that a copy of the resolutions should be sent to the chairmen of the Block Committees. The Rev. E. P. Blamires, on whose motion the committee was set up, states that it is intended to.make the fullest investigation into the matters referred to in the resolutions.
