WHAT THE NAVY HAS DONE. THE MAYOR QUOTES FIGURES. Speaking at the unveiling of the volt of honour of the Linwood School last evening, the Mayor of Christchureh (Mr IT. Holland) referred briefly to the magnificent work of the British Navy. Quoting figures, he said that at the outbreak of war the British navy was manned by 145,000 men. To-day it hjul 430,000 men. Then its connate had beau-4,000,000 tons. To-day, notwithstanding the losses at the Dardanelles, in the North Sea, and in all other waters of the world, the British Navy had a tonnage of 0,000,000. (Applause). When the war storm burst, motor patrol boats and the like, the mosquito fleet, numbered 12. To-day they had 3300 such boats. In one year, the ships of the Navy proper had travelled over 1,000,000 miles, while the auxiliary navy had travelled 0,000,000 miles,'all in British waters. Of 13,000,000 men that had been ferried across the Channel only 2700 had been lost. That was (hie to the wonderful protection of the Navy. Besides the men, it had safely guarded the transport of 2,000,000 horses and mules, 25,000,000,000 tons of explosives, and 130,000,000,000 tons of foodstuffs. Yet Germany said that the British Navy was hiding away!
