Cabinet has considered the question of whether marble bars may be kept open on Sundays, and its decision is in agreement with that of the Chief Justice, that the law does not forbid this kind of trading on Sundays. At a sitting of the Magistrate's Court at Rangiora to-day, before Messrs W. G. Whiteside and H. Boyd, J.l'.'s, -James Green, charged with being a vagabond, having no visible means of support, was sentenced to seven days' imprisonment. The Arbitration Court at Wellington yesterday heard an application for an interpretation of the Wellington bakers' and pastrycooks' award, a

Two alterations have been made in the Canterbury Rugby Union's list of fixtures for next Saturday. In the first grade competition, Merivale will play Albion-Adiiington on the Albion ground; not on the Old Boys' ground, as originally arranged. In regard to the address on the subject of a scientific tariff delivered at a meeting of the Industrial Association on Tuesday evening by Mr J. B. Laurenson, a letter dealing with the matter has been sent to Mr A. \V. Jamieson, president of the association, by Mr J. A. Frostick. Mr Frostiek suggests the calling of a meeting to which would be invited all classes of citizens interested in the problem. The matter should be placed before the meeting in all its bearings, and care should be taken that the speakers arranged for were not extreme or narrow on any particular phase of the question. A small committee of research should be set up from the meeting to study the question from the broad principle of national development. The Motherland would be fully occupied for many generations with the work of reconstruction, and this country would have to face the problem of it's future development through its own industry and resources. In the investigation which he suggests should be made, Mr Frostick thinks that the greatest care should be taken to see that class interests are made subservient to national progress. 7 h.p.
